Your first session is a free trial where we talk about your experience, your musical interests, and what you hope to accomplish. You will hold the instrument, try a few fundamental motions, and leave with a clear sense of what the learning path looks like. No pressure, no commitment.
Ongoing lessons cover viola-specific technique: the slightly wider finger spacing compared to violin, the adapted bow grip for the heavier bow, relaxed left-hand position, string crossing, shifting, vibrato, and tone production. Repertoire includes the essential etudes and solo works of the viola canon, as well as duets, orchestra excerpts, and chamber music. We emphasize reading alto clef from the very first lesson so it feels natural from the start.
The viola is an excellent first instrument. Its size is manageable for children (fractional sizes available), and the alto clef is no harder to learn than treble — it just takes a week to settle in.
The transfer is natural. You already know the left-hand shape and bow hold. The differences are what make it fun: clef reading, C-string resonance, and a new expressive range.
Viola sections are always in demand. Strong violists are treasured in school orchestras. Lessons build sight-reading, section leadership, and audition readiness.
