The Teacher
A musician's life,
shared note by note.
Zebie has spent a lifetime in conversation with music — performing, recording, and teaching throughout southeastern Michigan and beyond. His studio in Ann Arbor has welcomed students from their very first open-string hesitations all the way through to confident, expressive playing.
"Every student carries their own music inside them. My work is simply to help them hear it."
Whether your child is five years old and enchanted by the fiddle's voice, or you yourself are fifty and have harboured a private wish to play guitar — Zebie's patient, encouraging approach meets every student exactly where they are. No two lessons look alike; no two students are treated the same.
With nine instruments on offer — from the intimacy of the ukulele to the full percussion of the drum kit — there is a place here for every musical curiosity that walks through the door.
What We Offer
Nine instruments.
One patient teacher.
Lessons shaped entirely around each student — their instrument, their goals, their pace. All ages welcome; absolute beginners embraced.
Violin & Fiddle
Classical technique or folk traditions — Celtic, old-time, bluegrass. The instrument that speaks every musical language.
Guitar
Acoustic and electric. Chords, fingerpicking, lead playing — from campfire songs to full arrangements.
Piano
The foundation of musical literacy. Technique, theory and repertoire built together from the very first lesson.
Ukulele
Joyful, portable, and kinder to young fingers than the guitar. A wonderful first instrument for children.
Drums
Rhythm is the heartbeat of all music. Drum lessons build co-ordination, timing and a sense of groove that benefits every instrument.
Accordion
A rare offering in Ann Arbor. Whether Cajun, folk or classical repertoire, the accordion is a singular and rewarding instrument.
Cello
The richest voice in the string family. Cello lessons for beginners and advancing students alike.
Viola
The viola's deeper, warmer tone sets it apart. An ideal second instrument for violinists, or a compelling first choice.
The Studio in Life
Music, as it actually happens.
What Students Say
The music speaks,
and so do they.
"My daughter was shy and hesitant at seven years old. Within six months she was playing for the whole family at Thanksgiving. Zebie has a gift for making children feel genuinely capable."
"I started guitar lessons at 52, convinced I was too old. Zebie never entertained that notion for a moment. Two years in, I play every single day. It has changed my life entirely."
"We tried two other teachers before Zebie. The difference was immediate and unmistakable. He actually listens — to the student, not just to the notes being played."

Common Questions
Everything you meant
to ask.
What instruments do you teach?
Piano, violin, fiddle, guitar (acoustic and electric), ukulele, drums, accordion, cello, and viola — an unusually broad offering for a private studio in Ann Arbor.
What age can children start music lessons?
Most children are ready around age five or six. Enthusiasm and attention span matter more than birthdays. Zebie will tell you honestly — and kindly — if the timing is right.
I'm an adult beginner. Is it too late?
It is not. Adults who come to music with genuine desire often progress with remarkable speed, partly because they know exactly why they are doing it.
Do I need to own an instrument first?
Not before the first lesson. Zebie can advise on renting or purchasing the right instrument after meeting you, saving families from well-intentioned but misdirected early purchases.
What areas near Ann Arbor do you serve?
The studio is in Ann Arbor, easily reached from Ypsilanti, Saline, Dexter, Chelsea, and most of Washtenaw County. Online lessons also available.
How long are music lessons?
Thirty minutes for young beginners; forty-five or sixty minutes for older children and adults. The right length is chosen together, based on goals and attention.
