Learn Accordion in Ann Arbor

The accordion is one of the most expressive and versatile instruments ever built, yet finding quality instruction in Washtenaw County is surprisingly difficult. Zebie Music Lessons fills that gap with dedicated, one-on-one accordion instruction at our studio near downtown Ann Arbor.

Whether you are drawn to the driving rhythms of Cajun two-steps, the rich harmonic language of classical accordion literature, or the sing-along warmth of folk traditions, your lessons will be shaped around the music you love. Students of all ages and experience levels are welcome — from children picking up an instrument for the first time to adults returning to music after years away.

We serve students throughout the region, including Ann Arbor, Ypsilanti, Saline, Dexter, and Chelsea. If you have an instrument, bring it. If you do not yet own an accordion, we will help you find a quality beginner instrument that fits your budget and goals.

What to Expect from Lessons

Lessons are held weekly in a focused, encouraging environment. The first session is a complimentary trial where we discuss your musical interests, assess your current experience, and map out a learning plan. You will leave with clear next steps and material to practice.

Every lesson builds toward real musical ability. You will learn proper posture and hand position, bellows control, bass button navigation, left-hand chord patterns, and right-hand melody technique. As you progress, we introduce ornamentation, register changes, and stylistic interpretation specific to the genre you are pursuing.

Cajun & Zydeco

Two-step rhythms, crawfish walks, waltzes. Learn the driving, dance-oriented style that defines Louisiana accordion playing.

Folk & World

French musette, Celtic polkas, Nordic waltzes, and Eastern European folk dances. A deep well of accessible, beautiful repertoire.

Classical

Transcribed keyboard works, original classical accordion compositions, and chamber repertoire. Develop precision, phrasing, and dynamic control.

All Ages

Children as young as eight can succeed on the accordion. Adults find it uniquely rewarding — the physicality of bellows control engages body and mind together.

Why the Accordion?

The accordion carries melody, harmony, bass, and percussion in a single instrument. It is a complete orchestra strapped to your chest. For the student, this means you learn music theory intuitively: the left-hand bass buttons follow the circle of fifths, and every chord you play reinforces harmonic relationships you will hear for the rest of your life.

It is also a social instrument. Accordions anchor dance halls, community gatherings, and folk sessions. Whether you dream of playing at a local farmer's market, sitting in at an Ypsilanti folk jam, or simply entertaining family around the fireplace, the accordion brings people together.
